Not an Apology.... I swam 1 mile in 5C water So yes I'm a 1 mile ice swimmer.

I'm just not recognized by the IISA org as a 1 mile ice swimmer.. which is fine I'm not saying I am an IISA 1 mile ice swimmer and won't until I do an official Ice swim as per their rule. But!!

I have been getting some back feed/ flack from the IISA about my Ice swim saying I was irresponsible in my swim for not having proper supervision and support! And I should apologies for doing so? and amend my blog title as I posted on May 25 2014 about my story of my ice swim, which I won't, I wrote about what I did as it is my story of my event stating the truth.

So in that, I will apologize to IISA as they take their Ice swimming seriously as do I, but I will not apologizing for what I did, as stupid as it was!!

At this time I should mention to other swimmers out there Please! do not do this without proper support and training! I did the training, cold water training for years! This wasn't a fly by night attempt at ice swimming for me! Keep this in mind You can die out there!

I know I didn't write in detail leading up to this ice swim, but I had medicals done before hand, I had ECG done and saw my cardiologist who gave me a green light to do my swim, telling me I have less than 1% chance of having a cardiac event! and that I am very heart healthy!! And I also knew with the beach festival going on there were paramedics by the beach and many people along the beach should I get in trouble which was a factor in my decision to keep swimming...And I also know my limits, which I felt at this time I was within which I was.

Although IISA won't recognize me as an official 1 mile ice swimmer? (As I said before it doesn't matter to me!) I did a 1 mile swim in 5C water and am satisfied with that! Was I reckless? Probably!! But I succeeded and am proud of it!

But if you want to be a 1 mile ice swimmer officially with IISA check out the IISA web site for details of rules etc...Do not, I repeat do not attempt Ice swimming without seeing your doctor getting full physical and do your training.

As for me I will continue on what I do with always thinking safety first!

Why am I doing this swim?

1) I thrive on challenges. I like to do extreme things, I always have and always will, as long as I am able. I am a 4 time Ironman and have been reported on doing Polor bear dips in our lake mid winter, both being fun and extreme!
2) I'm a good swimmer, not super fast, but a very strong swimmer and believe I can accomplish my goal of swimming across lake Ontario.
3) Because not many people have swam across Lake Ontario successfully and I want to be one of the very few to do it....something like why mountain climbers climb mountains?
4)In dedication to my mother who is a 3 time Cancer survivor ( breast and colon cancer) and to help support her and cancer survivors in thier fight in a way I can, by raising money for RVH Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre for Patient care.

Current requirement for a Lake Ontario Crossing as mandated by Solo Swims of Ontario

As a guide to potential aspirants, the following fees (Canadian dollars) and requirements are necessary for an SSO-monitored swim:$50 Information Package(Includes the application forms).It is also available for free if downloaded from the Internet.$750 – $1,250 Swim Registration fee depending upon the swim $100 Optional Recording Fee for a Trial Swim on a recognized course – e.g. a 10-12-mile Lake Erie trial swim to qualify for a Lake Ontario swim.The swimmer must have a minimum of two 15-foot-long inflatable boats, which are to be obtained at the swimmer’s expense.The swimmer must also have a minimum 30-foot sail boat AND a minimum 30-foot power boat, both with GPS navigational equipment.The swimmer is responsible for arranging for these boatsand any necessary fees. The assigned Swim Master may provide details on the acceptability of the boats (Inflatables, sail boat, and power boat).The swimmer is also required to complete an open water,SSO-monitored,Trial Swim of 16 km (10 miles) or 6 hours, whichever is the shorter. The course of the Trial Swim should be well-detailed, and ideally documented with GPS data. The assigned Swim Master attends this swim and monitors aspects such as the swimmer’s ability to swim, feed properly and maintain a good pace in the final stages of the Trial Swim.The Trial Swim is about one-third of a typical Lake Ontario swim and, depending upon the weather and water temperature, the swimmer should appear quite fresh at the end of the Trial swim.Based on the observations recorded during the Trial Swim, the Swim Master will judge the suitability of the swimmer to make an attempt.- for more detailed information refer tothe SSORI.
