Day 23

Today's training 2 hrs

Spent one hour in the pool. First I Swam 2000m Pushed hard the first 1000m in 16min second 1000m in 17min and then did some Springboard diving after that! Man that was fun! and tiring! talk about a cardi workout! and I don't mean the swim? Great crosstraining! I forgot how much effort it take to dive? it's been a while since I've been on the board, almost two years! 

After the fun, I changed into my gym cloths and I went up to the gym for the second hour where I ran the treadmill for 30min and did weights.

Day 21

Todays workout

30...30...30...30....

30 min weight workout pushed a gazillion pounds!! Ugh!
30 min run!! slow and steady!
30 min swim! my arms felt like lead after the weights! 1500m
30 min spin! Whew! tired!


My total swim this week

13,400m ....I'm getting there!

I weighed myself today and I've lost about 15 lbs  so far, ...Another 40 lbs and I'll be at my Ideal weight, I'm shooting for 180-190  if I keep at this pace with diet and excersize I could be down to weight in 2 months just in time to get in my long open water swims in April! ...Oh wait? there will still be ice on the lake! lol Oh well, I'll have to do end to end never ending swims in the pool until I can get in the lake. lol

Oh! and it just dawned on me!? 6 months today I will be starting off on my 52km swim across lake Ontario!  :)

Day 20

Today's workout


1hr in the pool

2000m straight set in 36min
4x50 speed set

Total for today 2200m.

Saw allot of my peeps in the pool today, Genevieve Blais, Brian Chew, Kevin O'Neil, and Kalvin Chu! all lanes were used with one swimmer per lane except for my lane when a young girl 16ish decided to jump in my lane, my only thought was Figures! pick the lane with the fastest swimmer!? ...Seem she new that! as she was fast! tickling my toes a few time during her speed sets!

After I finished my 2000m set she asked me " How far did you swim" ...I took it as a compliment,  as like I said, she was fast and noticed I had a good clip going. lol  and said just 2000m.lol

We chatted a bit and I found out she is training for ITU AG racing, maybe one day getting to the Olympics! and wants to do Ironman some day when she is old enough! 

I love the fact a young person like that aspires to some big goals! and told her keep working and when you are a pro triathlete you can tell people you used to swim with me! ;) lol

Day 18

Not a good training day, probably because I didn't do any training today.  I slept in because of another migraine I guess I'm a little dehydrated again?

I have to learn to drink more fluids at work after my morning swims.

Day 17

Today's swim

1:20hr straight swim 4200m

I felt sluggish with a little stiffness in my shoulders, probably from yesterday's weight workout, but all in all a smooth swim.

My leg feels fine for walking but is still very tender to touch. I think It will be ok in a few more day's, as long as I don't bang it! ;)

Day 16

Total of 1hr training today

My leg/shin is still aching and hurts to touch, but it felt ok to walk on, and I didn't get x-rays, I didn't feel like sitting at emerg for hours. 

That being said I biked for a half hour with no ill effects then did some weights, I didn't run which I thought would be wise...said the guy who didn't get x-ray's ;)

Day 15

Week three

Today's swim ....3000m in 1hr But I was lucky to manage that!

Last week getting out of the water after my swim on Wednesday I banged my shin up good when I missed lifting my foot up onto the deck while pulling myself out of the water as I usually do to get out, but this time when I tried to jump up out of the pool I missed my footing falling back into the pool smashing my shin on the corner edge of the  deck!

Well I didn't think anything of it except it hurt allot and I had to compose myself on deck to look cool in front of the people around and just walked it off into the change room. By the time I got to the change room i had a big goose egg on my shine but it wasn't hurting, unless i touched it so I continued on with my day.

Well fast forward to today as I walked to the waters edge at the pool for my swim, I jumped in feet first as I always do and plunge myself into he water ducking under, But this time when my feet hit the pool bottom and as i ducked under i felt my right leg give under my weight, the same leg that i smashed my shin  with and in the very spot mid shin where I injured myself last week I felt a intense pain and my whole lower leg went numb and limp!

I let out a little yelp under my breath as I had to look cool around the people in the pool and didn't want anyone to see me in any pain.  I then just crouched down in the water for a few Min's gently moving my leg in the water and tried to see if i could put any pressure on my leg....Nope, I couldn't put pressure on it, I think I may have cracked my shin bone!! (Tibia) .... Oh well, I had swimming to do, so I started to swim.

As I swam down the lane I could barely kick with my leg and when I got to the far end I tried to push off the wall and couldn't! I couldn't even touch my toe on the wall as it hurt my leg, so I pushed off with my one good leg and continued on my swim.

As my swim progressed i was able to kick more and more as my swim went on, but just a normal 2 beat easy kick as i was babying my leg hoping it's really not broken!

I continued on and finished up my 3000m swim in 55min and then chatted with a friend Maxine for a little bit, telling her what happened and showing her my shine. I was afraid to get out of the water for fear I couldn't walk!

I finally sat up on the edge for the pool and swung my legs around to stand up using my good leg then slowly put pressure on my hurt leg and limped across the pool deck to the change room.

I'm fine and there is no pain when I'm off the leg but it hurts to put pressure on it walking and to touch, so I'm thinking I might go get an x-ray and see if indeed I have a cracked my tibia when I hit the bottom of the pool as I jumped in?

Day 14

Took a rest day today as I went out to visit my mom and wish her a happy birthday, she turned 76 on the 16th!

The weeks total swim was short of my 12,000m goal with only 11,800m ...Training is going on schedule and I'm feeling strong!  I plan on adding a little more distance this week!

Oh and for fun I decided to go for a barefoot run in minus 14C temps today!

Just to toughen up! ;)

Day 10

My longest swim to date!

As I was entering the pool  from the change room I ran into Zack Hurd,( my swim coach for my Lake-O swim) as he walk by me he gave me some great advise! He told me to have a good swim! ;)

Today's swim was good! Thanks Zack!!  I swam my first 2000m warm up in 38min and continued on to swim the second 2000m warm down in 38min....I thought I might go on and swim another 1000m more to reach 5k, but I didn't want to push my distance to fast, there is always Friday's swim for that! ;)

I had some company in the pool today! Genevieve Blais, who will be one of my swim pacers on my Lake - O swim, showed up to do a swim workout.  It was nice to see her out! :)

Oh, back to my swim! ...So I did my straight 4k swim in 1:16hrs I felt good! I almost felt like going out and continue with a 180km bike and 26.2 marathon after to complete a full Ironman!!..if the weather was good? lol .....

Man!  I can't wait until I'm fit to do some longer swims!...In the mean time I'll just keep plugging away! ; )


Oh, in other news!! I got a e-mail back for the Amazing race Canada, thanking me for sending in a new video and wished me good luck!! ....How cool is that! :)

I spent all morning getting my Amazing race Canada application video edited and produced to send in to the Amazing race Canada so I didn't have time to work out, which would have been a run and bike today.... No loss, I'll make it up tomorrow in the pool.

Day 7

First week in the book!

2100m swim today to finish off my first week with 9700m total swim with some running, biking and weights thrown in between and I'm feeling good!

Now after testing the waters so to speak with what would be a normal full Ironman training week for me, I plan on increasing my swim distance per session and adding a swim day as well as throwing in my bike, run and weight routine and see how it goes!

In the mean time last week CTV Toronto was advertising applicants for a new show, The Amazing race Canada.... So I sent in my application with a short video in hopes that Joanne and I could compete as one of the teams!

I got a reply from them and I thought maybe it's just your standard e-mail saying thanks for applying and we will be in contact if selected? But instead, The Amazing race Canada sent me an e-mail asking me to send them another short video of Joanne and me! Maybe we have a chance to get picked? Woooo! ....In the mean time I've been going all Steven Spielberg!.....Action!! lol

Day 6

No training

I had every intention of working out today, I did get up at 7am to go for a swim, but instead I went to the washroom, then went back to bed, I finally woke up at 10am. Oh well! lol

When I got up, I went for my coffee to plan my next step, ....Well, instead of going to the pool,  I ended up cleaning up the back yard, then had another coffee, then thought about going to the gym..... Well that didn't happen!!  Then I put together my wife's new bike shoes ( attaching the clips and putting on her SPD peddles on her bike) she got for X-mas, then had her test them out on her bike while I made fine tune adjustment.

Then I got another coffee and thought more of going out to get some sort of workout, ....Naw!

Ended up watching tv the rest of the day! So basically I decided to take a rest day today and I'll pick up my training tomorrow with a good nights sleep.

Day 5

Today's workout.

In my 3rd swim this week and since Mid Sept.  I managed the first 1000m in 19min and then without stopping I continued on with the harder second 1000m also doing it in 19 min, and I wasn't even breathing hard?! ; )..... I dare say I pace very well!!  Not to mention that I think my muscle memory is coming back? lol

On a serious note! ...

I did a 200m set of leg kicks only after the 2k, then I did my speed work sets of easy 25 breast up and  25m sprint back for 500m and call it a day!

Total swim today.....2700m

Day 4

I'm pleased to say my body is standing up to the light workouts I have started with this my first week of my journey to swim lake Ontario.

I have no real muscular pain from my weights or running and swimming, albeit my training is light and I only started on Monday.

I feel my arms are feeling tighter and stronger with some fatigue from my first 2 swims in 3 months, but over all good, but today I woke up with a migraine, probable a result of being dehydrated, as I'm starting to feel the effects of cutting back what I'm eating, sticking to eating mostly protein while cutting back my carbs and drinking lots of water, but at the same time my body is losing more water with my extra workouts making me dehydrated giving me this migraine

So as a result of this, I'm not going to push myself today and only do a little weight work before going into work and get my hydration back in check for tomorrow's swim.

Total training today.....Zero hours!

Day 2

So I figured I'll go to Holly rec center today for a good training bloc at noon, then head straight to work from there as it is on the South end of Barrie saving me some time and gas.

I worked a good 30m weight session and treadmill run then head down to the pool for another hour swim. I get down to the pool and the lifeguard asked if I'm doing aqua fit?  I said know,lol She said the pool is only open for aqua fit class from 1-2pm.  I said you have a whole half a pool open? and there are 2 lifeguards on deck? She said sorry it's just the way the city planned the time.  I said that is stupid! ...she agreed! 

So I showered and changed and came to work an hour early, and now it looks like I will have to re plan my training schedule?

2013 New Years Day Polar bear swim fund raiser

What a great turn out for my New years Polar bear swim! We had 10 people run into the icy cold lake with Fire department support and divers and over 50 spectators including the Barrie Examiner and CTV news covering us! I am overwhelmed with the support for my cause!! Thanks you everyone!
